My kitten has a crusted rash on ears and above eyes. What to do?

Hello. If your little kitten has crusts of skin, there is likely a wound or an infection. This could be due to fleas, or bacterial infection. I would suggest washing the kitten carefully and removing the scabs and crusts, and look for wounds. If there is pus, or wounds present then I would get him to a vet. Either way a vet check-up is a good idea. Otherwise if it is just crusty you can check him for fleas or 'coffee ground' like substance in the ears that would suggest ear mites. Ask your veterinarian if these have been ruled out at this point. If not, look into testing for these. Crustes around the eyes can indicate a viral infection. Ask your veterinarian if they are suspicious of that. Sometimes these problems can be related to food. I recommend to feed a high-quality diet such as Royal Cann Persian kitten food. It has additives and supplements for coat health for the breed. Royal Canin food is good in general if you cannot find the specific Persian variety. It's best to get it diagnosed by a veterinarian, because ringworm can spread to different parts of the body and can spread to people. Also, the more involved the infection, the longer it will take to clear. This severe of an infection requires oral antifungals and regular bathing to clear it. It may take 2-6 months before it is completely cleared. For now, I recommend washing your hands anytime you touch the cat. You can also buy an antifungal shampoo at the pet store, or pharmacy (if none at the pet store). Bathe the cat once a day until directed otherwise by the veterinarian. Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! The pictures are good but it's still tough to see what is going on. Hair loss with dry/flaky skin is often indicative of ringworm especially in kittens. This is highly contagious to other animals and to people making it a zoonotic disease. I would definitely have a vet evaluate the litter and start treatment for a fungal infection right away to prevent this from getting worse. I would quarantine the litter away from all other pets and humans especially young children and the elderly since they are most likely to get infected. Even the shed hairs can contain fungal spores so direct contact with the animals is not required to get infected. It could be something else but in the pictures it is highly suspect since it looks like the paws and tail are affected. These areas on the skin look very suspicious of a ringworm infection or bacterial infection. Ms Pussington needs to be seen by a vet to get this looked at and treated. This won't respond to any at home treatment unfortunately. I would recommend scheduling an appt soon for her. In the meantime you can try cleaning the area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to provide a topical antiseptic clean. Nothing else should be placed on these wounds. She will likely need a skin scrape/cytology to identify the underlying pathogen and then treatment based on what the cause is. I hope she feels better soon.

I would recommend bringing the kitty in for an examination at a veterinarian as we can have bacterial or fungal infections, and even parasites under the skin that can cause lesions such as this. In the meantime you can clean the area with an antiseptic solution such as Chlorhexidine and keep kitty indoors to avoid flies contaminating the area.
