My new kitten won't eat or drink after 24 hours. What should I do?

Hello. I do not think you have too much to worry about just yet. There is always an adjustment period when a young pet comes into a new home, especially if the kitten was just taken from its mother & siblings. Give Milo a few days to adjust by allowing him to explore & become comfortable. Have him examined as soon as possible by your veterinarian to make sure he is healthy, has no intestinal parasites or external parasites like fleas or ear mites. He is old enough to start his kitten vaccinations, but I do recommend having him check for the feline leukemia/feline immunodeficiency virus at his first visit, too. Ozzie's whole world has just been turned upside down by coming into a new home with new people, so he is likely quite stressed at the moment. Some cats refuse to eat or drink normally during times of stress, so there are a few things that you can try to help Ozzie along. First of all, try to leave him alone as much as possible so that he can acclimate to his new environment. Also assure that his food and water are in slightly quieter and more secluded areas of your house so that he has some privacy while eating or drinking. You can also try using calming pheromone collars or diffusers, such as Feliway. He may be tempted to eat with canned cat food, small portions of tuna, or meat-based baby foods. Warming up these foods slightly will make their odor stronger, which is often enticing to cats. However, if Ozzie still won't eat or drink by tomorrow, it may be worth a trip to the vet to assure that there aren't any other medical conditions at play. I hope this helps and that Ozzie warms up

It's possible your kitten could have an underlying illness or some digestive upset. If he is refusing to eat or drink and is very lethargic, it would be best to take him into your vet ASAP for a full exam to find the cause.

It may take your new kitten time to get used to her new surroundings. Try keeping her in a smaller area, like a bathroom, with her littler box and food/water. Being in closer proximity to them may encourage her to eat and use the box. You may also want to try offering her canned kitten food, as opposed to kibble. This may encourage her to eat more. When she does eventually defecate, if it is outside of the box, place the stool inside the box to help her learn where to go. If these tips are not working and your kitten is still refusing to eat or drink, you may want to consider taking her in to the vet to be checked out. I hope this helps. I'd put Miko in his own room with food, water, and a litter box so he has some peace and quiet. Check on him in the morning, and if he still hasn't eaten or drank, have him seen by a vet. Best of luck.

Moving to a new home can be very scary for new pets. Bring Claymore the food and water and put them next to his hiding area (if he is under the bed, put the dishes under the bed). Also bring in his litter box close to the area. Giver him a few days to get use to things. Keep the environment calm and don't allow him to be hounded by other pets or children until he is more comfortable. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Congrats on your new baby! Sometimes when animals come to a new house they are scared and need time to adjust. For a kitten, I recommend placing them in one room with the litter box, food and water. When they get used to that room then open the door and let them explore, but leave everything in that room. Then as they get used to their new house get the food, water and litter box where you want it. At 8 weeks old Ash should be eating kitten food. Try dry and canned and see if he has a preference. Sit with him and encourage him to eat. Place him in the litter box a few times. If he still isn't eating or using the box by 48 hours then I would recommend you have him evaluated. I would pick up a Feliway diffuser or spray if they sell this product in your area https://www.feliway.com/us#redirected and offering kitten food (both canned and dry) and also soaking kitten food in with some kitten milk replacer to see if she has interest in any of these. Giving us more information such as the kitten's age and history may help us to better answer your question.

This isn't good. While a bath is stressful, it shouldn't stress him out so much that he hasn't eaten for 24 hours and slept the whole time. It's actually very serious when a cat won't eat, so I would take him into a vet immediately to get checked out.

Congrats on your new cat! You are correct that Oliver should stay inside for a while since he has moved to a new home, good on you for doing that! It is a little concerning that it's been 36 hours with no eating or going to the litter box, but moving into a new home is stressful. Because cats can develop a fatty liver when they haven't eaten for three days or more, which is fatal without treatment, I'm going to give you some things to try to tempt him to eat. You can soak his food in gently warmed low sodium beef or chicken broth, or soak it in tuna juice. You can also try offering him small amounts of boiled white meat chicken (no bones). If you can get him to eat, then he will use the litter box. Should he still not be eating in the morning, then I would take him into the vet for a health check just to be safe. Hopefully, however he will eat some of the tasty morsels I've suggested you give him :-)
