Is neutering safe for my delicate dog? What are the pros and cons?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 13 lbs

What are the PROS and CONS of neutering? I’m scared because he is so delicate (he had to get steroid shots because his shots hurt him).

Hi there. Advantages of neutering include less tendency to urine mark and hump things; less desire to roam in search of female dogs in heat; prevention of prostate problems such as BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) and prostatitis; and prevention of accidental breedings. For a small dog like this, there really aren't any major disadvantages. Neutering is generally a routine procedure with very little associated risk, and most dogs are back to normal within a few days. I would recommend discussing this further with your regular veterinarian, since he/she knows Tiny and can help you decide what would be best for him.
