What causes rough, scratchy paw pads on my active dog? Hyperkeratosis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 7 years old | 16 lbs

What is wrong with my dogs paw? It is a weird texture on the pad and they are scratchy. He's very active so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Does he have hyperkeratosis on his paws? What can I do about this?

It does look like hyperkeratosis, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. If it seems like it is bothering Oscar, I would have him examined by the vet to see if there is a reason that it is occurring and why it is uncomfortable. There are also some prescription ointments that can be used to reduce the excess growth.
