My dog is limping after lying down. Can I bandage his leg at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 2 months old | 9 lbs

My dog is favoring his left leg and helps when he has been laying down for a while and gets up. I suspect he either has a sprain or something. Most times he walks on it just fine. Should I bandage it and just stabilize it?

Hi there. No, I would not recommend attempting to place any kind of wrap or bandage at home - this is not likely to be helpful, and often makes things worse. If your dog is painful enough that he yelps when he gets up and is limping on one of his legs, I would strongly recommend taking him to the vet to find out what's wrong. Your veterinarian can examine his leg and take x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed.
