My dog ate string, it's not passing. Should I worry? What are signs?

My dog ate a 3 inch braided string (he chewed some of it up, creating shorter string) almost 40 hours ago. He has pooped two times after that, but still no sign of the string! He is not vomiting, and he will eat some things. I’m starting to get very worried though. Do you think it’s going to pass? What can I give him to help move it along? Or do you think it’s already caused damage? And what are the signs of an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system?

It can take up to 72 hours or longer for this string to pass. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do to get it to pass, it either will or it won't. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, or lethargy, then I would take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Hello. 3 inches is not very long, so it should pass with no problems. Problems would be if Rocket stops eating, starts vomiting, develops a painful tense abdomen, strains to defecate or develops a bloody stool. If any of these symptoms appear, please have Rocket assessed by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
