Why does my parakeet sneeze and rub his face only at bedtime?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered

Hello, I have a male parakeet. Every night when I put him to bed, he goes to his bedtime perch and starts rubbing his face on his perch and sneezes multiple times. The only time this happens is at bedtime and he does not have any symptoms of being sick, so I don't think he is sick. The only time he sneezes otherwise is after preening or if he gets food on his face, and he does not show any symptoms of being sick. I was wondering if the bedtime sneezing is just part of his nightly routine?

It could be! Birds can sometimes rub on objects they like, or to help clear their beaks/noses. If he does this habitually and isn't showing any signs of illness I wouldn't be concerned. If you do see this happening at other times, he's sneezing a lot, has discharge, or starts to show signs of illness, then a vet check to rule anything out is always best.
