My dog drank milk and has diarrhea with red dots. Is it blood? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 26 days old

I fed my dog milk when I’m not supposed to. (I didn’t know they’re not allowed to drink milk) she now has diarrhea. And her poop has this sticky stuff i think its mucus. And it has red dots on it. Is that blood? Should i be concerned about the red dots? Is there any remedy i can do to put the milk out of her system? I have photos of the red dots here.

I am sorry to hear about your pup! In a puppy this young with these symptoms we do worry about things like intestinal parasites and parvo virus, which are not caused by milk. I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian to check for these issues. It could also be colitis, which can be caused by a variety of things including diet changes but if it gets severe where we are seeing blood, it often does require treatment by a vet with antibiotics https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951545

Any new food/treat that you try which followed by diarrhea can be assumed as a trigger so please do not offer milk again. With puppies we have to be much more careful with how conservatively we treat them because their immune system is not mature and at 2 months the puppy is not fully vaccinated so they are susceptible to viruses such as parvo that can be fatal and present with GI signs of bloody diarrhea and vomiting. As long as diarrhea is the only sign and the dog is active and playful and no vomiting present you can try the puppy on bland diet of boiled chicken breast and rice and offer her plenty of water even some of the boiled chicken water to prevent dehydration. But if the dog seems depressed and less active or vomiting or not eating or blood present in the stool it is highly recommended to take her to the vet to get checked.
