My dog is hacking, drooling, and won't eat. Should I go to ER vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bluetick Coonhound | Female | spayed | 5 years old | 50 lbs

Last night my Bluetick/Redtick started hacking like she was choking. I’ve seen her do this before, but it happened about 4 times. Since then, she’s drooling, she’s not active which is completely not her normal; no food or water. Won’t even lick an ice cube. She’s mostly just standing not wanting to move. Or she’ll lay beside me. Her ears are down and tail down. When other dogs run outside to bark at the UPS truck she just looks at me. She normally leads the way. Our vet clinic can’t see her her.

Call your vet clinic back, tell them it's urgent, and if they can't see or accept her as a drop-off, take her to someone else who will see her. She may have eaten something toxic, that didn't agree with her, she could have swallowed a non-food item that is now causing a blockage, she could have an infection, there are a number of possibilities. Your vet will do an exam, labwork, and x-rays to determine why she is ill and based on those results they will be better able to tell you what is wrong and how best to treat it.
