Why do I need a dog license if my pet is microchipped and vaccinated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

In my state, if you’re within city limits, you have to have an animal license or it’s a hefty fine if you’re caught without one. I do not see why we need to have an animal license when I have both of my dogs microchipped and they wear their rabies chip to let people know they do not have rabies. Apparently the license is supposed to help up find out lost pets aka a microchip....and it’s supposed to show your animal has their rabies vaccine aka the other chip they wear....makes no sense..

Unfortunately, some cities have lots of rules that just don't make sense. I can't tell you why they have it. It is your choice to follow the law or not, no matter how much is may or may not make sense.
