Dog has diarrhea from new food. How to help it pass & stop treats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 8 lbs

Dove has diarrhea from the sudden change in diet. We moved and don't have her food and it is prescription. It was so bad it was like running water. So we were told to do chicken and rice and its been helping. she still has running poop but it's not water like and had form now. She is still active and hungry and drinking water. How can I help this pass by faster? Should I not give her treats until this is all done?

Dove may need some antibiotics and/or probiotics to help get her gut balance back in order. In the meantime continue feeding her the bland diet and yes, I would cut out the treats until the diarrhea resolves completely. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
