My old dog is on pheno; can I safely stop her seizure medication?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 14 years and 5 months old | 24 lbs

My dog was put on pheno after 1 episode, dont know if i would call it a seizure. She has slight brain damage where she stands and dodders every now and then but no more "episodes". She has been on pheno since january. Her dose was 2 tabs 2 a day but her ataxia was severe so it was halved and now she is on a qurter 2 a day. I would like her off them as she is 14 and a half and i dont think i have that much more time with her, i would rather have her whole again for as long as i can.

Hi there. If she has not had any seizure-like episodes for several months and is still having side effects on her current dose of phenobarbital, it could be a reasonable option to try weaning her off. I would recommend discussing this with your veterinarian to see if they agree, and following his/her instructions regarding how to do this safely.
