Why is my pet rat breathing hard with red discharge from its nose?

My pet rat is breathing very hard and has porphyrin coming out of his nose.

Thanks for reaching out about Shepard. This is typically a mycoplasma infection of the upper respiratory system. Stress can often depress the immune system and latent infections become more pronounces. Decrease stress (separate individuals if fighting, lower light intensity if bright, decrease noise) as much as possible. A veterinary visit is needed to prescribe medications but mycoplasma is rarely curable but manageable. Good luck.
