My puppy has diarrhea, crying, straining, and scooting. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 30 days old | 15 lbs

My puppy is 9 weeks old and as of today he has been excessively vocal (whining, crying, whimpering), he's had diarrhea the last few days but also seems like he has to go more after but it won't come out. He will sqaut down and try but nothing comes out. He also has been rubbing his backside on the ground a few times today. He appears to feel pain/discomfort because he cant sit/lay in the same spot for long, he gets up and moves every few minutes and it seems like his backside is bothering him.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. Poor Hennessy. You can see in dogs a period where they feel the need to go when having diarrhea, but nothing comes out. It's just the urge. I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
