My senior dog can't walk after surgery. Will her leg muscles recover?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | spayed | 10 years and 9 months old | 50 lbs

My 11 years old husky can’t walk again because she lost all her muscles in her back legs after her surgery(removing her infected uterus(pyometra). It’s been 2 weeks. Will she ever walk again? If yes, how much time will it take to rebuild her muscles and walk again?

It really depends on the cause of the muscle weakness. If it was related to illness, then it could gradually start to recover. If the muscle loss is due to another underlying conditioning or age, it may require additional treatment such as pain meds, joint meds etc, or even assistance with walking/doggy wheelchairs. Since it hasn't improved in several weeks, i would schedule a recheck with your veterinarian to see if there are any additional treatments needed.
