Why is my dog chewing his tail until it's raw and red with pus?

Question

My dog is a 4 1/2 beuceron mix about 45 pounds and since yesterday he has been chewing on his tail so much that he has skin exposed now....we just put him on a cone just in case but it looks really red (not bleeding) and like with pus. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 49 lbs

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. Oh that’s not good! It’s quite concerning the skin is exposed, and it may be infected. You did the right thing by putting a cone on him. I would have him seen by a vet on Monday for this issue. Best of luck.
