My dog's heat cycle is unusual. Is she showing pyometra signs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 3 months old

Pippa was late coming into season this time 9 months in between. She had pups 13months ago and I’d wanted to mate her again. She’s 13 days into the season and only bleeding slightly she’s quite swollen and is standing but not for her mate she just snaps at him and won’t let him get near her which is fine. I am planning on getting her neutered soon as she’s 3. She’s just not herself and I’m worried she may have pyometra my last dog died from it and Pippa acting like she did.

Pyometra is driven by hormones, and if Pippa is nearing the end of her cycle, it is unlikely that she has a pyometra, which more often occurs 6-8 weeks after a heat cycle. Even though she is still showing signs of heat, she may not be willing to engage a male at this time, or it could be that she just doesn't like the male.
