Is it safe to stop my cat's prednisone cold turkey or should I taper?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 years and 4 months old | 10 lbs

Hi I posted a question earlier . My cat was on 20 mg of prednisone . I wrote about my cat vomiting , well it got worse after I wrote and he started vomiting with blood non stop . I took him to the emergency vet ( Sunday) and they said too high a dose of the prednisone and it needs to be stopped cold turkey , no choice . It won't hurt him , He was given shots for nausea I thought he had to be weened off and what do they do in a case like this ? Should I insist on a small amount .?

It depends how long he was on it. If he was on it for less than a week, you can stop it cold turkey. If it was longer than that, you can respectfully tell the vet that you are concerned about iatrogenic (meaning medical treatment caused the issue) Addison's disease (underactive adrenal gland). Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
