My cat won't eat, cries, and has painful ears. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 years and 5 months old | 16 lbs

I have a 10 year old neutered male cat. He has quit eating canned food. He acts like his ears hurt. Won't let me touch him anywhere near his ears. He mostly lays around and cries. He is also quite big and very strong, so I'm unable to hold him down to clean his ears. I'm wondering if there might be something else wrong?

ANy abrupt change in behavior is a good reason to have your cat checked by your vet. Your vet and their staff are trained to gently but effectively restrain and treat your pet without undue stress. If he has something wrong with his ears, the condition could worsen and cause further complications if not seen to, such as ear mites, an infection, allergies causing itching, there are a number of possibilities. Your vet will give him an exam, concentrating on his ears, if there is any debris in them they will sample that for examination under the microscope and, based on these results, will be better able to tell you what is wrong and what the best treatment is for your cat.
