Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 years and 4 months old | 10 lbs

Hi My cat had a purple dry looking paw ... vet said was nothing . The paw split open so I took him to another vet who said it was pillow paw. She put him on 20mg of prednisone for 2 weeks and lowered the dose to 10 mg a day for the past week . All blood tests were normal . While on the prednisone his other front paw is now purple . The first affected paw has healed but is still purple . Today the cat has started vomiting a lot . Is it prednisone ? What to do next Alternative diagnosis ? ty

Those doses of steroids seem very high to me. Unfortunately, you cannot just stop giving them. They must be weaned off. You need to speak to your vet about this. Sometimes they do better with a different immunosuppressant (like cyclosporine) and/or doxycycline. ( https://www.marvistavet.com/plasma-cell-pododermatitis.pml ) Since Tommy is not really responding to the treatment, the next step would be to do a biopsy of the affected tissues as it may not be "pillow foot". Hard for me to say without examining him myself. If it is pillow foot, sometimes lifelong treatment is needed.
