My dog had parvo, now vomits solids. Is he recovering normally?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chow Chow | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 19 days old | 64 lbs

My dog chico was diagnosed with parvo 3 weeks ago and he was in the vet for 1 week. When we let him come home he is somewhat energetic and is very interested in food. But this week when we gave him some easy to digest solids he vomits. He still has an interest in food but my mother refuse to give him solids because he will vomit again. He is energetic to this day . His poop is fine ( a little liquidy ). May I ask‚is he recovering?‚ is this normal? And can liquids substitute solid food?

Solid, easily digestible food should be fine at this point. (a commercial sensitive stomach diet, or boiled chicken and white rice). Since he wants to eat, and is energetic, and his stools are good, I would say that yes, he is recovering. However, it is not normal for him to vomit every time he eats solid food. It may be that he just has some residual gastritis (inflammation of the stomach ), and you might ask your vet about trying him on an over the counter acid reducing medication such as famotidine to see if that helps. https://www.veterinaryplace.com/dog-medicine/famotidine-for-dogs/ If that is not helping reduce the frequency of the vomiting, then he should be rechecked. He may have another issue going on, and lab work or X-rays may be recommended. Thank you for asking PetCoach!
