My new dog is coughing and gagging. Is it kennel cough or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 37 lbs

I adopted a 1 year old pitbull, 3 days ago. I noticed that she has been sneezing a lot and today just started coughing a lot to the point it makes her gag. She still has plenty of energy and eats just fine. Someone told me to give her raw honey to soothe her coughing? Is this something I should worry about or maybe just something slight that will go away on its own? When I adopted her from the shelter, she came up to date on all shots.

Poor Gabbana! It could be she has kennel cough or she could have a respiratory infection. I wouldn't give her the raw honey, but if you do, it has to be a very very small amount. Too much isn't good for dogs. I think she needs to see a vet. I would take her into one on Monday. Best of luck.

It does sound very like kennel cough. Kennel cough is a generic name for various viruses and bacteria. The viral aspect cannot be treated, so if it is mild and Sadie seems bright enough you can monitor her and try giving her honey and lemon to soothe her throat. You could call your vet and ask if there are over the counter cough bottles available in your area that are safe for dogs. If she is very sore it may be necessary to get antinflammatories from the vet to settle ger throat. If she starts to seem sick with it go to the vet in case it has become a bacterial infection in her lungs which will need antibiotics. Dont let her share bowls at the moment as she will ne very contagious.

I am so sorry Sadie isn't feeling well. There isn't much you can give a dog over the counter for a cough. I would recommend taking Sadie into your veterinarian's office. It is a good sign that she is energetic and even though not stated in the question I assume she still has an appetite. She may have a virus and possibly just an upper respiratory infection which usually resolves within 2 weeks, but this can also develop into a secondary bacterial infection, bronchitis or even pneumonia. Your veterinarian will make sure that Sadie's lungs are clear and can give you medication to help with her cough. If they feel that is may be bacterial or she is at risk of a secondary bacterial infection they may prescribe antibiotics as well. I hope Sadie starts to feel better soon and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
