My cat's eye is squinting and watery, but no discharge. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 12 years and 4 months old | 9.9 lbs

Since around 2pm Friday 14th June she has what seems to be a slightly irritated eye (cat‘s right eye) she is squinting and holding her eye shut at times. There sometimes seems to be moisture or water around the eye. She can open her eye wide. We have not observed any discharge, swelling, redness. Her eye looks slightly uncomfortable does not seem to be causing her any significant pain or discomfort. She did have this about a 3-4 months ago. It seemed to clear itself after 12 hours.

There are many reasons that she could have these symptoms. My best guess based on the history is a herpes keratitis. Very common in cats actually. I know it went away on it's own before but they can get corneal ulceration which may be what is going on at this point and why it hasn't seemed to clear on it's own. She will need meds for the eye. They squint from pain and light sensitivity so I do think you should get her to a vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes,.
