How to stop my dog from licking a bleeding hot spot without a cone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 8 lbs

He keeps licking a hot spot until it bleeds. Only way to stop it is the Cone of Shame, but we have to remove it occasionally. Is there something we can apply to the area to make taste so bad he won't lick it?

Not really, but if you havn't done any treatment for the hot spot other than putting the cone it's not likely to resolve, this will require antibiotics and possibly allergy medications, take him to the vet and get it treated ASAP.

Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent further licking or chewing. This alone may allow time for healing. Continue to medicate her as directed by your veterinarian. Legally, we are prohibited from recommending medications or providing dosing information in the absence of a physical exam and a patient-veterinarian-client relationship. Discuss antihistamine use with your veterinarian.
