The last 2-3 inches of my dogs tail are hairless and a dark purple to black in color. Is it time to get it amputated?

Hello. I would need to see your pet to determine the extent of the problem, but you certainly do not describe a healthy tail. If the tissues are badly compromised & dying, you should have the tail amputated above the diseased/damaged area to prevent spread of bacteria into the rest of Luke's circulation. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
