First-time pregnant dog not showing much. Should I get an x-ray?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Female | 4 years and 5 months old | 11.5 lbs

I breed Gretchen 4/20- 4/21 and 4/22. She has shown every classic symptom of being pregnant OTHER than I feel her belly should be showing more. She's 54 days pregnant by calculations. Her abdomen has puffed out but she's just so small. Is it normal for first time Moms not to show so much, or wait until the last days to fill out? She's due in about 9 days should I wait it out or see about an x-ray? This is my first litter as Well and I'm anxious for her. Thank you!

If this is your first time breeding and her first litter it is best to get an x-ray. That way you will know for sure if she is pregnant and you will also know how many puppies to expect. This article may help you as she gets closer to whelping - what to expect: ( https://www.petcoach.co/article/whelping-giving-birth-in-dogs/ ) Hope this helps. Best wishes.
