Why is my bird plucking feathers, changing color, and pooping orange?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Conure | Male

I got my bird around 8 months ago, and everything seemed great. But around a month ago something started to feel off, my bird chews on his feathers too much, he hasn't started plucking them but I'm scared he might start soon. His stomach is not it's original reddish orange, but is now fading darker, and his feathers look all choppy, along with his back feathers. I changed his diet to a different brand about a week ago, recently his poop started to appear orange. I'm really worried

Thanks for reaching out about Pudge and including photos. The black around the rim of the back feathers are probably stress bars. Poor feather quality can be due to dietary deficiencies, metabolic disorders (liver, renal), infectious diseases (viral, bacterial) and others. A veterinary visit is recommended to assist with a diagnostic/treatment plan. Diet should consist of pellets, a proteins source, a wide variety of vegetables and few or no seed. Good luck.
