My FeLV cat is breathing fast after a fight. Is this an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6 lbs

My cat is 1 year and has feline leukemia. She got out of the house 2 weeks ago and got into a fight. Her wounds are all healing well. But she has fast paced breathing this morning. Do I need to take her in?

Cats with FeLV are at an increased risk of getting infections or other diseases, so I would recommend that Bonnie get checked out. It may be nothing, or it could be early signs of infection or heart or lung disease causing the increased respiratory rate. The vet will do a thorough exam including looking for abscesses or other wounds that could cause pain. They may also recommend x-rays to look for issues with the heart or lungs.
