How to help a cat with a broken leg use the litter box without pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | African Serval | Male | neutered | 11 months and 12 days old | 10.7 lbs

My 1 yr ml cat has been hit by car. At the vet yesterday, found out his tibia and fibula are fractured (oblique displaced) and same leg, femoral head has broken off into the socket. The vet put on a splint for the lower bones. But because I can't afford the surgery needed to mend or remove the femoral head, we decided to see if time would heal him before we consider amputation. My question is: how do we help him when he needs to use litter box? He yowls in pain if trying to get up or if touched

Prince may need a change or an addition of pain medications if he is still yowling in pain. You can try using a litter pan - you can use a cookie sheet with just a small amount of litter on it. You may also want to consider using a litter alternative while the splint is on. Yesterday's news, shredded paper, or pellet-types of litter are easier to clean off the splint and fur and to keep from getting inside the splint. It may take a few more days for Prince to figure out how to get in a comfortable position to urinate or have a bowel movement. I would call your vet about the pain medications and see if they recommend a change.
