My dog's urine smells like tuna. Is it a recurring bladder infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 14 years and 5 months old | 60 lbs

My dog had an accident in the other room the other night. The urine smells like tuna and is very strong. Could this be a bladder infection and should I take him to our local vet? He just had one about a month ago that he took 10 days of antibiotics for. There was no blood in the urine like there was last month so that is good I think. Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes. I recommend to have this checked. You may want to consider a urine culture instead of a regular urine analysis. A culture will check for any antibiotic resistance. Also make sure to have his prostate checked. Recurrent bladder infections in male dogs are uncommon but still possible. I hope this helps.
