Why is my Dachshund panting, squirming, and acting unlike herself?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Female | 12 years and 5 months old | 9 lbs

Dachshund 9 lbs. Noticed yesterday she was not acting Normal. Strong odor from bowl movement, squirming couldn’t get comfortable in her bed seems to be rooting with her head a lot and she in now panting off and on. She refused to go outside with me yesterday which is very unusual because she follows me everywhere. Husband thinks it is just a tore up stomach but I have never seen any of our animals like this and I have had a lot of animals.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Marley. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. While she could be experiencing gastrointestinal pain, her breed is prone to neck and/or back pain. This can make a dog hesitant to do stairs or jump on furniture. Most of the the dog is pant and become clingy. Some will refuse to eat. Her veterinarian will examine her and determine the source of her discomfort. From there, treatment can be prescribed. I hope this information helps!
