My dog with IBD is vomiting. How to stop BVS and entice him to eat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 15 lbs

Jack was diagnosed with IBD and after starting a novel protein diet and prednisone, seemed to improve drastically but then seemed to develop BVS. Looking for any recommendations on how to solve for that. He eats twice a day, I’d like him to eat right before bed but if he’s not hungry, he won’t eat. Would adding pumpkin purée to entice him be ok? started Proviable, and it seemed to decrease but not go away. He’s thrown up twice this week since starting proviable. Any advice?

Generally more frequently feeding solves bilious vomiting. If he won't eat more than twice a day, it's fine to mix in something to entice him and pumpkin puree is a fine choice. A little rice or oatmeal could also do the trick. Just watch for worsening of the IBD when you add in another food and don't use any food he's had before. My other advice would be that if he's vomiting and it's not after a long stretch of not eating, it's probably related to his IBD or something else entirely rather than BVS, so let your vet know so they can continue testing/looking/thinking. Wishing you and Jack the best of luck!
