My cat won't take doxycycline. Can I crush it or use liquid?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 months and 10 days old | 9 lbs

Can you give me some info on dexocycling 50mg for cats? I have a 11 mth that started last month with a 103 temp, 3rd eyelids exposed, had covenia shot, and week later steroid shot, nothing helped. Today had test, bloodwork fine, neg on felv and fiv. Lost half pound also. Since fuo Vet thinks toxoplasmosis and prescribed this. Since cant dry pill, would a syringe with water after pill work? Hes not into treats n not eating much. Can pill be crushed? Thank you.

No don’t crush the pills. It is very bitter. Shoving it down his throat and then chasing it with water to ensure swallowing is the best option at this point. You should really speak to your vet about having it compounded into a liquid - they can make it chicken or tuna flavor to make it more palatable. They can actually make it it many different forms. Here’s an example. I also believe they will ship it directly to you. ( https://www.wedgewoodpetrx.com/items/doxycycline-oral-suspension.html ) Hope this helps. Best wishes.
