New 8-week puppy: green watery stool and not eating. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 26 days old | 2 lbs

Recently brought home a Maltese female (8 weeks old). She ate well on her first day but this morning she ate only 3 pieces of kibble. Her stool has been watery and green. Is this something to be concerned about? We are going to her initial vet visit on Thursday.

It sounds like Penny has a bit of diarrhea. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
