Why is my dog losing hair around his eye, with discharge and itching?

My dog has lost hair around his eye and there is discharge. He also scratches, rubs, and licks his hair and skin to the point of matting. He isn’t exposed to other animals so it feels unlikely that he has fleas. What could be the problem? Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

The number one reason they lose hair around their eyes is mange. I suggest you have him to your vet for an exam. It could also be allergies but without examining myself it’s hard to say. You are welcome to try giving him some antihistamines for a few days to see if that helps but if not he really needs to see a vet. I would try using Zyrtec.
