My puppy keeps licking her dry, flaky rectal area after spay. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 6 months and 5 days old | 2.2 lbs

My puppy was desexed 5 days ago, since then she has not taken any notice of the wound but has been chewing/licking her rectal area. Anal glands were expressed but rectal skin is dry and flaky. What could this be caused from?

It’s possible the glands are inflamed from the expression. Or perhaps the rectum is irritated from the thermometer? Unfortunately it’s impossible to know without an examine. I recommend to call your veterinarian and tell them what is going on. They may recommend to start her on an additional anti-inflammatory, a fiber supplement or even another type of medication to address inflammation. I hope this helps.
