How to stop my 12-week puppy's biting, snarling, and tantrums?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 28 days old | 4 lbs

No matter what I am doing, my puppy wants to bite me. At first it starts out playful, but when I tell him no bite, he throws a temper tantrum and snarls out me and chomps and throws his head back and forth. I don’t know what to do. I’ve tried yelping and diverting his attention to a toy but that doesn’t work. Should I put him in his crate? I believe since he is 12 weeks, I should be able to change his behavior.

This is quite extreme behaviour for such a young puppy and I would recommend enrolling in some puppy training classes to help! Clicker training and regularly reinforcing positive behaviors (such as sit/wait/lie) when he is calm such as after walks or meals can help improve his focus and basic commands - follow good behavior with plenty of praise and treats and ignore any bad behaviour - removing him to his crate can help before he gets over excited but be careful this does not create a flashpoint for bad behaviour if he refuses!
