My senior dog's nails are long and curving. Should a vet trim them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 10 years and 9 months old | 13 lbs

I how a 10 year yorkie/maltests mix and noticed her front toe nails are very long and curving. Apparently her groomer has not been trimming them, Can they be trimmed with no pain to her or does she need to see her vet.

Its impossible to know with out examining the quick of the nail. if the quick of the nail is cut, it will cause pain and bleed. I recommend to have the veterinarian cut the nails at least this one time since they are the best ones to know if there are concerns with the length of the quicks. Moving forward, make sure the groomer is clipping her nails. Best of luck.
