How to get my cat to like my room without biting when I put him there?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Male | neutered | 9 months and 17 days old

My 8 month cat HATES my room whenever I go to put him in there he tries to bite me and squirms to get down. Today I got so frustrated with him I tried to smack/hit his back a bunch of times and squirted him with a squirt bottle. What can I do to get my 8 month old cat to accept my room like my 12 year old cat does so that I can put him in my room at night or when I am going out without fear of getting bit or him running away from me so that I don't get frustrated/angry and hit/smack him again.

Cats are individuals and just like people, they all have different preferences. Not all cats like to held. It likely has nothing to do with loving you. If you want to encourage your cat to like the experience, remember the always be slow and patient. Don’t force the behavior upon your cat or he will have a negative experience and then will rebel against it. A good place to begin is encouraging him to sit quietly in your lap. Once he is comfortable on your lap, he may allow more handling. If he seems otherwise happy, you may be content with meeting him where he is and finding a different way to express affect and bond. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
