My kitten ate baked beans. Will he be okay? Are they safe for cats?

Hi, my kitten ate some baked beans around 20 minutes ago. I’ve read online that it can be poisonous. I don’t know what to do because the beans didn’t have xylitol in them. Is it worth taking him to the vet or will he be ok ? Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

Hello. I would not be concerned as long as the beans did not contain a significant amount of chopped/powdered onion or garlic. Onions & garlic can cause some problems in the blood & symptoms may not show for several days. You might see loss of appetite, depression, increased heart & breathing rate, weakness, jaundice ( yellow tinge to the skin & mucous membranes & a red to brown urine can occur. If Casper ate a small amount, like around 1/2 teaspoon, he will be fine. If he ate a substantial amount, you might need to take him to your vet quickly to have him cleaned out. But, a small taste is just fine. I hope Casper has no problems with this & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
