My 1-year-old German Shepherd is skinny and won't gain weight.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 19 days old | 61 lbs

My 1 yr old GSD still has not gained any weight despite giving more than the recommended amount of food, I also add home cooked meals on top of that. He has low platelet count so the vet advised Doxycycline for 2 weeks - he didnt have any other symptoms except he gets tired easily after jogging. After the Doxy - platelet count still low. Vet said I shouldnt worry if my dog doesnt have any other symptoms. But I'm worried and my dog looks very skinny for a 1 yr old male. Please help. :(

As a breed, German Shepherd‘s tend to be thin dogs and some lines are more thin than others. Continue feeding him a high-quality, high protein diet. I recommend the brand Royal Canin. Be careful with exercise and make sure to follow your veterinarian’s recommendations. Lastly, Colt is not done growing yet. The first year of life is devoted to upward growth and the second year of life is when pets fill out so he is still developing. I hope this helps. You may speak with your veterinarian about sending off a blood sample for analysis to find out if the platelet count is truly abnormal or if any blood parasites or seen. Best of luck.
