My dog sits oddly, tail tucked, restless, scared. Is he in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | neutered | 11 years and 6 months old

My dog has been sitting down abruptly with his bottom tucked in and his tail between his legs. He has been restless for most of the day (tripping every now and then) and every time he tries to shake himself out, he sort of does a half hearted job (a small wriggle if his head) then gives up. He also has a worried look on his face and seems scared of something.

That sounds like Toby may be in pain or feeling uncomfortable in the hind end or back, especially if he is shaking, seems in distress, and is abruptly sitting or having trouble walking normally. It's a good idea to bring him into your vet for an exam and to have the back checked as back issues are very common in "long" breeds such as Dachshunds. Your vet can help check for any pain, inflammation, swelling, or arthritis that could be potential causes.
