My new rescue cat is distressed, banging head on door. How to calm?

Hi, I just adopted a rescue cat this afternoon and I have settled him to sleep with enough resources in the bathroom, but he is distressed and banging his head against the door. I am really worried about this behaviour and I dont know how to help him or make sure he is okay for the nigh.

If you have no other pets there is really no reason to keep him confined. He will be able to find the food/water/litter. So, if you want to let him out you can. This won't help you tonight but I suggest you get some Feliway diffusers/spray to use in the house - it should help him settle in better and calm him down.
