My dog ate a tiny bit of old mouse poison. What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 20 lbs

My 1-year-old Frenchie-cross (9kg) might have eaten a tiny amount of very old mouse poison today. Found him with a tiny piece of cardboard in his mouth with 4-5 pellets stuck to it (we have lived here 3 years and never baited so must be older than that) took it out of his mouth immediately but unsure if he’d eaten one or not. Called the emergency vet and he said as type of poison unknown and very minimal (if any) ingested then just to keep a close eye on him for now. Should I be worried?

It would really depend on the type of poison and how much Eric could have gotten. At the very least, I would recommend that he be seen by a vet for baseline blood work and coagulation times and to start Vitamin K in case it was an anticoagulant rodenticide. If it was a below-toxic ingestion, the Vitamin K is still safe to be given.
