Dog spay surgery: Should I worry about bloody cough or incision?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 42 lbs

Do I need to use Bactene or something on my dogs incision where she has been spayed? Its been 3-4 days since surgery. And she coughed up a small amount of bloody mucous is that something I should be concerned with? I adopted her yesterday so I dont know that much history.

Generally it is not recommended to put anything on the incision. It should heal unassisted. Read this helpful article: https://www.petcoach.co/article/incisions-and-healing-in-animals/ Coughing up bloody mucus is however concerning and not normal. I recommend to call your veterinarian or the humane society where she came from right away. It could be related to many things from an infection to a wound in mouth or throat. They may want to examine her. I hope this helps and best of luck.
