My dog's eye is irritated and draining after grooming. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 8 lbs

Mylo, our 15 month old doggy, had drainage and irritation to his right eye after I picked him up at the groomers yesterday morning. I immediately did an eye wash with saline filled syringe. One hour later his left eye was doing the same and at this point he wouldn’t open either eye. I repeated saline wash to both eyes and notified his groomer. She used dawn soap for a few fleas she saw and said she uses all approved mild shampoos for pets. Fast forward 24 hrs, rt eye still affected, left eye ok.

Since it has not improved, consider an exam with your veterinarian. Kylo may have an infection, corneal injury (scratch or ulcer) or foreign body. Your vet can stain the eye to aid in diagnosing. The tear duct may also be flushed to clear obstruction. Place an e-collar (cone) on Mylo to prevent pawing or rubbing until he sees the doctor.
