My dog swallowed an earring backing. Do I need to go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 13 lbs

I THINK Tiny swallowed a backing to my earring, I lost it earlier but I didn’t see him swallow anything, and I wouldn’t think he would be interested in it even if he did see it. He just ate and was playing afterwards and has now fallen asleep (he normally does after playing). Should he be fine? I’m worried about any toxicity or even damaging him. I’m trying to avoid the drive to the Vet since they are an hour away. *Picture of how earring backing looks like*

I would not be worried about this. You can feed Tiny a piece of bread to help coat and push the earring backing through his GI tract if he did eat it but honestly, it should not do any harm. Hope this helps. If you have more questions you can always opt for a private consultation where we can chat back and forth. That way you can ask as many questions as you'd like. Best wishes.

Oh no, that's not good Mochi swallowed an earring! I'm not sure how big the earring is, but if it's quite large, she will need to see a vet immediately. It could get stuck the GI tract and/or cause perforation of the GI tract. The vet can determinate the best way to remove the earring. Please take her into an ER vet clinic if your vet is closed; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
