My puppy has something weird on his nail. Is it dirt or an infection?

I have a puppy that was born 4 weeks ago. He was born with something odd on one of his nails. I'm not sure what it is. It looks like caped on dirt but I'm scared to mess with it.

I am sorry to hear about your puppy. Without examining the nail in person it is difficult to tell if this is a congenitally abnormality with a deformed nail or a possible nail infection or debris caked to the nail. I would consider soaking the foot in an epsom salt soak to see if it loosens the material. If it does not or you don't feel comfortable messing with the nail then an in person exam at a vet's office is recommended.
