My small dog won't eat her food. What should I do about her appetite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 4.1 lbs

Robin has hardly been eating lately. We feed her About 1/4 cup of Nutro hard dog food....4 little beef bite toppers chopped up and mixed with her hard dog food. She weighs less than 4 pounds and I don’t want her to starve or be hungry. She’s all normal except that she is now hardly eating her food. What should I do?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your pup! If this is a sudden change in appetite I would recommend an examination at her vet to ensure that she is not having a medical reason for the change. As a small dog her intake may not require much food, but if this is a behavioral change it should be investigated. The dog food you feed should have a chart on the bag or packaging should have a chart with guidelines on how much is recommended to feed for her weight (it varies from food to food) to give you an idea if she is eating an adequate number of calories.
