My dog's sad after puppies. Is it depression, hormones, or illness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 45 lbs

Can a female dog have depression or anything that would make her sad since she has had puppies there 1 year old now but ever since she’s had them she seems depressed and acts like a totally different dog. What could be wrong with her and what do I do for her it’s so sad maybe hormones?

We can't diagnose depression in dogs, but I guess it would be possible. I would start with a thorough exam with your vet. They will ask about all of the things that happened around when you noticed her symptoms. They may want to check for endocrine diseases that can affect behavior. If everything checks out medically, they can prescribe medications for anxiety or depression as a trial.
